5 MiScOnCePTioNs Of NaiL CaRe

As a nail care professional in training to be able to educate and inform the masses of the knowledge I am receiving in school truly makes me happy. In this post I am going to educate and inform you on 5 misconceptions that nail lovers like myself before starting school tend to believe. If you are familiar with these misconceptions than pass this information along to someone that may not know.

Misconception #1 Gel is better for your nails than acrylic.

📷

You are told that to make you feel like you are paying extra for something that you think is better for the health of your nails....Just kidding.. LOL. The fact is that gel is no better than for the health of your nails than acrylic. The process of laying an artificial substances on top of your nail plate is still the same. The length of time between its maintenance (fill-in) is typically the same. How long the tips last should be the same of course depending on how both sets are taken care of  by the wearer. Even the lifespan of each set it typically the same. You may be saying what is the "lifespan of a set". Keep reading and you will find out.

Misconception #2 All the nail techs in the salon are licensed nail techs📷

Sorry to break it to you again but NOPE NOT ALL nail techs in SOME salons are licensed. In the state of Georgia at least, one nail tech can be officially licensed for a shop to run. The others within the nail salon are "apprenticing" basically put they are practicing on your nail and has had no formal education outside of what that one licensed nail tech is telling them to do. Scary HUH. So for us nail tech newbies that receive comments like "nah Imma go to the salon to let professionals do my nails" LOL.....OKAY!!

Misconception #3 Gel comes in a powder form

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!! Please do not allow this misconception to get you! You will be literally paying for a acrylic set for a gel price. There is no such thing as a gel powder. There are only hard and soft gels that have a goppy consistency. The brushes for gel and acrylic application are even different.

With acrylic a powder and monomer liquid is used to sculpt the artificial tips/ nail form. Monomer liquid is poured into a dappen dish the acrylic kolinsky nail brush is then placed into the dappen dish to absorb the liquid then placed into the Acrylic powder to make a bead of acrylic and then placed onto the nail plate and tip/form.

Misconception #4 Refilling the same set 6 months or longer is okay

Wrong Again!

I attended a seminar with guest speaker nail stylist Terrance Terry of Luxe Nail Bar in Sandy Springs GA where he stated that typically a set of nails meaning 1 full set has a lifespan of 2 to 3 months at the most. After the 2nd or 3rd month mark you are to soak them off and get a new set.  Upon researching the topic myself I also found that it is recommended that sets be soaked off and changed after  the 3rd month.  Some nail salons and nail tech will tell you when its time for a new set. It is easy to determine when you are a regular at a shop. Some nail techs are even able to tell just by looking at you nails.

Misconception #5 Getting acrylic on your nails can cause you to get a fungus

NO NO and NO!  Acrylic A LONE CAN NOT be the blame for a clients getting a fungus on their nails. Fungus is an overgrowth of mold, and how is mold created? In dirty, dark, moist, covered places. When someone has on artificial nails with gel/acrylic if they have ANY lifting/cracking dirt debris are able to get under the acrylic/gel and sits. When the person washes their hand water gets under the lifted or cracked nails and it sits. If the person does not regularly get their nails done then they are way more susceptible to mold growing thus causing a fungus. It is the nail tech job to prevent this lifting from taken place.

It is the goal of this post to educate and inform in an informational and fun way. I hoping that was achieved. If you have any other misconceptions that you want me to research please feel free to leave a comment below.

Until next time Have a Blingtastic Day!!!
